Ryker
I woke up in a cold bed, pissed.
Missing her. Wanting her. Hungering for her like a starving man.
I’d wanted her in my bed the night before. Hell, I wanted her in my bed every night for the rest of time, but especially, that first night after the garage. But Addison had shaken her head, kissing me.
“It’d be confusing for Kyrie, if she gets back from Axe and Larkin’s and we’re… you know.”
She was right, and I knew it. She might’ve been young but she had brains. She saw things, she understood how people thought and how the world worked. Fuck, was that refreshing.
Axe dropped Kyrie back off early, and she and I were eating pancakes when Addison stepped into the kitchen through the back door.
“Morning, Addison!”
“Morning, kiddo! How was your sleepover at Axe and Larkin’s house?”
Kyrie grinned a toothy smile. “It was pretty fun. Aunt Larkin made me hot cocoa when I got there, and uncle Axe let me stay up and watch this scary movie about a clown with him.”
I scowled, whipping my gaze from where I’d been drinking Addison in to look at my daughter. “What did he fuc—” I clamped my jaw shut.
“You’re not supposed to watch movies like that, honey. They scare you.”
“They’re not real, Dad,” she sighed, looking at Addison and rolling her eyes, like they were in cahoots about his.
“Yeah, seriously, Ryker. They’re not real you know.”
Addison winked at me, grinning wide as I glared right back at her with a “you’re gonna get it for that later” look. But then I turned, grinning myself at the way Kyrie beamed at Addison and then started chattering away with her about pancakes. And then movies. And then some Olympic gymnast she was obsessed with.
And fuck if Addison didn’t just chatter away right back.
Damn, she wasn’t just smart, and worldly, and fucking gorgeous and sexy as hell. She was good with Kyrie too. I tore my eyes away in an instant, shaking my head.
The fuck was I thinking, that I was going to run off into the sunset with this chick? Please. I knew what this was. For me, well, for me it was real. For me it was letting someone past my armor for the first time in years. For her though, c’mon, this was a story for her. This was something to tell her girlfriends later when she was married in the suburbs to some working suit. Some “girl’s night out” story about that one wild fling she had. I was an idiot to think otherwise.
But just the same, I couldn’t stop looking back at her. I couldn’t stop craving her, and wanting her. Maybe there was a voice inside telling me to run the fuck away from this, but I shoved it away. I needed more of her, and I was going to keep coming for more of her until I physically couldn’t.
I noticed she’d left the J. Crew look behind that morning, and instead had strolled in wearing ripped-knee jeans, a tank top, and boots.
